
The building was designed by architect Sir Terry Farrell; people have lots of different opinions on what it is meant to look like – a shark, a boat or even an ice cap? He didn’t design it be anything like that; it was to be an icon for Hull and beyond that, just whatever people wanted it to be.
The Twilight Zone display opened on 19 March 2005 and is the worlds largest display of animals from the deepest parts of the ocean. There are wolf eels, nautilus, giant Japanese spider crabs and giant pacific octopus all from 200 – 1000 metres down!
The Deep has one of the deepest tanks in Europe at 10 meters deep, visitors get to travel through all that water in a glass lift where they get a close up view of hundreds of marine creatures.
It has over 40 sharks and 3000 fish in the building and over 3 million litres of water.
The Deep opened on 23rd March 2002 and has had over 2 million visitors since then.
